History Krk - Historical and Cultural Information about Krk
The town of Krk, the main place on the Island of Krk, is placed in those Adriatic and Mediterranean towns of Croatia where can be seen on every step marks of the history. Even in its name you can find trails of Illyrian civilization which named the island and the town K(u)R(y)K(ta).
When the Roman Empire started to spread on the east coast of the Adriatic, Krk became an important Roman municipium which was called prudly by its citizens "Splendidissima Civitas Kuryctarum", which means the best town. In the town were then thermae, which were decorated with beautiful floor mosaics. With an early appearance of Christianity, the coastal area of the town of Krk, became a diocesan headquarters, which is also today, and in many religious objects can be found all forms of Christian culture.

In the Gothic style in the 15th century was built the famous Frankopan chapel, while the altar screen and two side ambos were built in Renaissance style in the 15th and 16 century. An unique sacral complex together with the cathedral makes triple-apse and three-nave Romanesque church of Sts. Quirinus, patron of the city and diocese of Krk, built in the 12th century, and represents the eastern Adriatic coast, an unique type of a two-storey building.
